I have a pin in my right knee and it really took me a long time to be comfortable squatting any weight. What I learned is that if I tried to stop at or around parallel or just below my knee would ache if I went ass to calve no pain at all. Then I started using wraps that were the casting style and they pretty much just stop you in the hole, for me that made a ton of difference. Not sure if this holds true for everyone but it's probably worth a try.
