Does anyone have any recommendations? I used Drive Crypt and Drive Crypt Plus Pack from 2001 to 2006. I haven't stayed current on what's best in many years. I don't mind paying for the software, just want the best thing out there.

Slic.

I use PGP (Kleopatra), it's free and easy to set up and use. Store encrypted backup data on Carbonite. Can encrypt pretty much any file including photos and video.

If you want full drive encryption, I'd look at VeraCrypt. It's free, open source and' has been audited numerous times. I have it on my desktop (Linux) and laptop (Windows) and the only drawback I've found is a little lag at startup and shutdown. That's going to happen with type of drive encryption.
