ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- Alabama coach Nick Saban believes his latest talented and tenacious team took a step toward creating its own identity.

Though it felt a lot like the 2011 Crimson Tide never left on Saturday night at Cowboys Stadium.

Dee Milliner and Alabama defense pushed around Michigan and showed they can still dominate, manhandling the eighth-ranked Wolverines and pounding Denard Robinson in a season-opening 41-14 victory Saturday night.

Alabama had to replace most of its starters, including three first-round draft picks, from a defense that led the nation in just about everything last year and helped the Tide win its second national title in three seasons.

"I think we came out in the first game and established the kind of identity we're going to have on this team," Milliner said. "On defense, we were aggressive. On offense, we came out and attacked."

C.J. Mosley returned an interception 16 yards for a touchdown for the second-ranked Tide. AJ McCarron, no longer with third overall draft pick Trent Richardson to hand the ball off to, threw two touchdowns as Alabama won its 11th consecutive season opener.

"I personally don't think we were trying to send any type of message," McCarron said. "We're just trying to do what coach (Saban) preaches. And that's to go out and play our game. Do what we're supposed to do."

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) -- The new era at Penn State is off to a disappointing start.

The Nittany Lions let an 11-point halftime lead slip away and Ohio quarterback Tyler Tettleton accounted for three second-half touchdowns to hand Bill O'Brien a 24-14 loss in his debut as Penn State head coach.

For many fans, just having football again at Beaver Stadium was enough of a victory following a trying offseason.

"We are ... Penn State," the anxious crowd roared in the fourth quarter, their team trailing by three.

Matt McGloin threw for 260 yards and two touchdowns guiding Penn State's new-look offense.

There were some other changes, too: players' names on the backs of the uniforms, and blue ribbons on the back of the helmets to show support for victims of child sexual abuse.

It was Penn State's first game since the NCAA's landmark sanctions including a four-year bowl ban for the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.

ATLANTA (AP) -- Sammy who? Andre Ellington and DeAndre Hopkins made sure Clemson didn't miss its star receiver.

With Sammy Watkins back home serving a two-game suspension for a drug arrest, the No. 14 Tigers still showed plenty of offense in their opener Saturday night.

Ellington rushed for 231 yards, while Hopkins set a school record with 13 receptions, including the game-winning touchdown in the fourth quarter for a 26-19 victory over Auburn.

The fast-break offense of coordinator Chad Morris carried on just fine without Watkins, piling up 320 yards rushing and 528 yards overall.

"We had to fill that void collectively as a group, and we did that," coach Dabo Swinney said. "Guys stepped up, and filled the void for Sammy. When he's on the field, obviously he can impact the game. But we're proud of how the team picked up the slack."

Playing before a 50-50 crowd at the Georgia Dome - basically halfway between the two campuses - Clemson shook off any hangover from last season's embarrassing 70-33 loss to West Virginia in the Orange Bowl, though it wasn't easy.

The second half was a battle of field goals before Tajh Boyd lofted a 4-yard touchdown pass to Hopkins, who made a brilliant, twisting catch in the corner of the end zone with 9:17 to go. The junior finished with 119 yards receiving.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Lonnie Pryor, James Wilder Jr., and Debrale Smiley combined for seven rushing touchdowns Saturday to lead No. 7 Florida State to a 69-3 win over Murray State.

Pryor ran for three TDs, and Smiley and Wilder added two apiece. Wilder finished with 106 yards rushing.

Florida State (1-0) scored on their first touch of the new season on Rashad Greene's 47-yard punt return just 89 seconds into the game.

EJ Manuel passed for 188 yards and a touchdown before retiring midway in the third quarter.

Murray State's Casey Brockman passed for 117 yards, but was intercepted once and sacked six times, including four by Bjoern Werner.

The Seminoles totaled 606 yards while holding Murray State (0-1), a Football Championship Subdivision school, to 156 yards.

LOS ANGELES (AP) Southern California athletic director Pat Haden says USC will investigate a Los Angeles Times report claiming two Trojans athletes received gifts from an employee of the Los Angeles County assessor's office.

The Times reported Saturday that former tailback Joe McKnight and former men's basketball player Davon Jefferson apparently received a car, an airline ticket and cash from Scott Schenter.

The former appraiser is under investigation in an apparently unrelated scandal at the assessor's office. His interest in the two athletes wasn't immediately apparent.
Haden says USC investigated reports of McKnight using a Land Rover registered to Schenter in 2009. The school worked with the NCAA, which didn't process a violation.

Haden says the school wasn't aware of additional gifts to the two athletes. USC already has discussed the report with the NCAA and Pac-12.

Haden replaced Mike Garrett in July 2010.

New Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby told CBSSports.com and other Big 12 beat writers in Waco that the conference’s new television deals with ESPN and Fox would likely be finalized and signed this week.

“I feel good about where we are right now,” Bowlsby said. “We released the first three weeks of the schedule so we’re sort of operating as if the contract is signed. There are no major pitfalls, we just have some things we need to put together — dotted I’s and crossed T’s. I’m hopeful we’ll get it done in the next few days.”

Bowlsby valued the combined contracts at $2.6 billion paid over 13 years – pumping a projected $200 million annually into the league through 2025.

Bowlsby also said site selection for the Big 12-SEC Champions Bowl is expected to be finalized by the end of the month. Bowlsby declined to name the five bids the two leagues received — speculated to be Arlington, Atlanta, Houston, New Orleans and San Antonio.

ESPN’s Brett McMurphy reported multiple sources identified Arlington and New Orleans as favorites in “a two-horse race” with Atlanta considered a long shot to host the inaugural Champions Bowl pitting the champions of the Big 12 and the SEC.
