I've been in the tech industry for 20 years and am burnt out. I am looking to start something new. May start a food truck. Not sure.

Anyone have suggestions on industries that pay decent and someone in their 40s could do? haha

What subjects are you knowledgeable about, other than your obvious tech knowledge?

Nope, no tech, selling programs $10 bucks a day, $50 bucks a week, $2500 per year, selling at least 10 per week every week minimum we shoot for more.
Do the math on that when we go to Vegas we will meet many more new people and we attend seminars and events all the time, the people ASK US to set em up, we don't have to sell em, we have what they want.
I have 2 acquaintances that make way more than us but we have another company that we still babysit and will sell next year as the value if it is peaking now, then hit this even harder.
Wish I had started sooner..

This is a tough, loaded question. FT is correct that it's good to consider areas where you have some unique skills, as those types of jobs will typically compensate you better as you have a skillset that is not a base commodity.

Also, if you're going to go into a new industry, be careful about starting a business in a sector in which you have little experience. Just because you were/are successful in tech doesn't mean you can simply enter another area and have instant success.

A bunch of guys in my shoes decide they're going to get into real estate, LOL. Nothing wrong with real estate, it's got a lot going for it. But I would never enter that market without first getting a job working for someone else in that field who has experience and a track record of success, so that I can learn the biz. THEN, I can make a more informed choice on whether that's a good idea.

A food truck sounds "romantic" in that you're making food that people enjoy, and interfacing with people, which can feel a lot more "human" than what you may have been doing in tech. But the food industry can be a tough biz. Doesn't mean you won't nail it, but perhaps you can get a job working in someone's food truck and learn the ins and outs. The successful people may make it look easy, but I bet there are certain things necessary to be successful. Get a good mentor.

Food Truck is niche type stuff , I don't think a generic menu these days would work you would need a hook.

Local delicacy maybe or some kind of super late night munchie thing near a college would be cool , "rip offs" of Ihop shit ya know
three things you cant go wrong cookin for the buzzed are anything sweet , smokey or savory .. its always a hit.

Was a gal down on the coast named Bet , she started a food truck selling fish and chips right on the side of the road in Boothbay Harbor.

The hook was everything she sold was fresh caught by her old man in the bay , so nothing was more than a day or two out of the water.

Super Super fresh and the size of the portions would gag a mule , you could order a large sandwich , stop at store to get rolls and make 3 normal sandwiches out of it , they were freaking huge.

Eventually the place got "maine coast famous" and now years later they have their own full time restaurant down there.

Food truck could be cool, but yeah, it’s tough. Maybe try working in one first to get the hang of it. Also, pick a niche, something unique like late-night eats or local specialties could help you stand out.

How long do you have to retirement age?
Find a place like a city or county with a pension and work there until vested. 7-10 years. You can get a job like a building inspector or a restaurant inspector for the health dept. with an associates degree making only 60K a year to start but add in the benefits and pension the actual benefits are closer to $100K. In 4 years i will retire at 60 and net about 20-30% more $ than I net now for the rest of my life without social security if that still exists as I do not pay into it. That is without touching my 457 and 401K.

You do not get into gov work for the paycheck but the pension. It is pretty easy, sometimes fun and as long as you do your job it is secure.
