The calorie in calorie out idea has been thrown around a lot. I could tell you this, if I eat a little less and I'm smart about it and I do a little more moving around, I lose weight. Reverse the process and I gain weight.

There is something he is right about that most people don't know. The FDA allows for a 20% error in their macro listing.

I've gained weight on less than 1,000 calories per day and lost lots of weight on almost 5,000 per day with zero change in activity so I completely agree with him. Everything I ate logged on here with pics.

Now insert the guy who ate nothing but twinkies and lost weight.

The issue with calories in and calories out is that the body is not a simple system. Too many variables. The same person one year could get fat on 3000 calories a day and get shredded on the same, with the exact same foods the next year. Liver, gut, pancreatic health, all play a role.

Muscle mass plays a HUGE role. 15 lbs of of lean tissue might mean you can consume an additional 1500 calories a day. When I had a stage weight of under 180 lbs, I would get fat on 3000 calories a day even keeping the carbs at around 150 g. Now that I am at the top of the heavyweight division (209 lbs stage weight this last year and probably added 10 lbs of lean tissue since), my maintenance calories are 6100 and around 800 g of carbs. I even had to cut out cardio or I couldn't maintain my weight in the growth season.

Exactly. There are way too many variables. Food allergies, insulin resistance, hormone imbalances, etc. Also the law of thermodynamics as I'm sure someone will bring up only works in a vacuum. Its absolutely does NOT apply directly to diet inside the human body.

Dear Lord,
I have seen the temptation and I am renouncing my desire to indulge.
But come on, gained weight on less than 1,000 calories a day? Lmao.
Lord forgive me.
Amen.

I am losing weight right now on 5200cals/d. But then I al taking in 1.8g of protein/d and about 25% carbs. My wife would be a 500lb blob on 1/2 of this. Nutrrition is so individual.

I find these conversations tiring as we retread the same issue. IF our bodies were a static system then CICO would be paramount. Few people honestly believe that. But they use CICO out to simplify things for newbies that get overwhelmed at the beginning of a diet.

there is value in simplicity when getttstarted. Then we learn that our bodies adapt. We all intrinsically know this as we see it all the time.

I don’t think we help people by telling them they can gain weight on 1000 calories and lose weight on 5000 calories. It confuses them and they throw their hands up in the air and think it’s hopeless.

Let a newbie get a few small wins under their belt to encourage them. In 6-8 weeks their body will start adapting and then you can begin educating them on how we’re adaptive systems and it will begin to make more sense
