So I received a letter from Time Warner today that I have been placed into a special promotion and My bill was going up to $178.73 from 158.73. I called and haggled with customer service for 30 minutes however was told if I just went with HBO, cable, phone and internet it would cost me more money than the $178.73 ..... bottom line cable companies have a monopoly and are increasing price at a rate no other business can. How does direct TV compare?

With direct tv I have all the channels for about $140 a month, that includes 5 boxes, 2 of which are DVR's....I get a discount because of my phone bill is bundled.....

Oh boy. Don't get me started on this topic.

Our cable company is also our internet and cell phone company.

We're into them for about $500/month minimum.

Unlimited high-speed internet w/ modem included, 2 cable boxes and I have no idea what we get because I don't watch TV anyway, and 4 cell phones with 4 GB of shared data.

I live in a socialist state so the rates are controlled to a degree by the gubbiment. Only problem is they donate to the politicians. I pay 150 for cable with NO extra channels, interwebs and phone.

I also have amazon prime.

We tried direct tv but they installed the dish where there was no reception so it never worked well. Kept cutting out at certain times of the day - usually just as our day ended and we finally sit down. There customer service was horseshit. They wanted a pile of money to come out and service the thing. We cancelled and the damn dish is still in my friggin yard. They don't come and get it.

Anyone try roku?

I can only get 1 cable service here and it is $200 a month for a phone that I never use since every time I made a call it was somehow an additional charge, several hundred channels I would never even think of watching and internet that goes out almost daily. I don't see how they get away with not being considered a monopoly.

I've had both, and I prefer cable. It rains and storms an awful lot where I live, and the signal gets lost very easily quite often with the dish. Cable is more reliable, and they will actually send someone out to work on things - when it's convenient for them, of course. I'm not crazy about either, but cable overall is my preferred way to go.

I also know that in the past it was difficult or impossible to get local channels and these internets with the dishes, but I understand that has changed.

One thing we highly functioning paranoids need to always consider is who owns all or big pieces of these companies. Guys like Buffett and Soros could easily convince management to take certain channels out of the programming choices, and edit the internets as well... :(

I have no home phone and on Jan 1st of this year we cut the cable. I have internet and the only TV I watch is Netflix. I have an antenna so once football season starts I can watch that on the local stations but chances are I will just listen to it on the radio.

Honestly its not a must in our lives and the $150 extra a month income is also nice.
