Paul Anderson is sometimes cited as the original strength Beast in public consciousness, especially as a Squat King. Growing up poor in the early 1950s on a farm in Georgia, his early Barbell was a steel pipe and an empty 55gallon drum at either end, into which he tossed various heavy things he found to get the total weight about where he wanted it, and sorta equal from one side to the other.

His early Squat Rack was said to be a hole in the ground dug at a depth so that he could do Quarter Squats from the hole with the DIY Barbell that sat up at ground level straddling the hole. For progression, he shoveled a little dirt into the hole he stood in, so that his Squats gradually grew deeper over time.

When he was discovered, he gained access to real gyms with real equipment, but in the beginning his Will found a Way to overcome incredible odds to get discovered in the first place.
