I took my family on our first all-inclusive this summer in June. We went to this place in the DR (not Punta Cana)

It was pretty cool. It was it's own island, and they allowed kids on it, although my kids are 20, 23 and 26. We ended up doing 3 days on the island, and 2 days of excursions (snorkeling one day, and checking out their National Park, caves another day). The workers on the island befriended the kids and they did stuff together socially during the day and at night.
Normally this place is pretty expensive, but we did it through Groupon, and got a good deal. For a family of 5, for 5 days, including air travel, I think I spent about $5K. Normally, it would have been 8-10K.
Personally, I like a more active vacation, so I'd rather go to Colorado and go mountain biking or hiking. After about 1-1.5 days reading a book in a lawn chair on the beach, eating and drinking myself silly, I get bored.
