A bail bondsman arrested recently on charges of possessing and selling steroids also worked for the company that administers New Hanover County’s ankle-monitoring system for inmates awaiting trial.

The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office arrested Shawn David Sullivan, 40, of 7901 Bonaventure Drive in Wilmington, and charged him with multiple steroid offenses Oct. 2.
Sullivan is a bail bondsman for All American Bail Bonding and was suspended from his job as a salesman for Tarheel Monitoring, a company that contracts with the county to provide the ankle-monitoring program.

Michelle Taylor, pretrial release specialist with the New Hanover County Pretrial Release Program, said Sullivan was suspended without pay after the allegations surfaced.
Taylor said Sullivan had handled the technical side of the business, maintaining computers and equipment.

On Friday, Grady Richardson, attorney for Tarheel Monitoring, e-mailed the following statement to the StarNews.

“Upon Mr. Sullivan’s arrest, Tarheel immediately suspended his employment with Tarheel until the disposition of his charges,” he wrote. “Upon disposition of his charges, Mr. Sullivan’s employment status with Tarheel will be reviewed and assessed at that time.”
Richardson said Sullivan “was not involved in the day-to-day services Tarheel provides to the county,” and added he’d been working as an outside sales representative for Tarheel.

But it was Sullivan’s employer, All American Bail Bonding, that posted Sullivan’s $10,000 bond two hours after he was brought to the New Hanover County jail, according to court and jail officials.

In arrest warrants, Sullivan’s employer is listed as Shooter’s Choice, a gun range, and he’s charged with nine counts of possession with intent to manufacture, sell and deliver steroids, as well as eight counts of selling and delivering steroids. He’s also charged with seven counts of maintaining a dwelling for selling steroids.

One of the addresses listed for maintaining a dwelling is 244 Princess St. – the same address for Tarheel Monitoring.

Sullivan also is charged with “manufacturing steroids” by putting labels on bottles to sell.
Additionally, Sullivan also faces four charges of possession of drug paraphernalia.
The offense dates are Sept. 2, 3, 14, 17, 21, 29 and finally, Oct. 2.

Larry Powell, co-owner of All American Bail Bonding and Tarheel Monitoring, said he’s known Sullivan for years, and he added he was a good guy who got caught selling to a friend who set him up.

“He’s not a drug dealer,” Powell said. “He’s not a person that pushes steroids.”
Powell said Sullivan provided technical support for Tarheel, but he did not oversee cases.

Sullivan, who graduated from the University of North Carolina Wilmington, also was working on contracts with counties in a handful of other states.

“If you speak with him five minutes, you’ll walk away and say, ‘My God, he’s a nice guy,’ ” Powell said. “He likes to work out. He’s a big guy.”

“All I’m asking you to do is not crucify this guy,” he said. “This guy does not deserve to be crucified. He doesn’t. He’s a good guy.”

His "friend" that set him up should have a few dudes hopped up on androgens beat the bejesus out of his ass. He was just trying to help a so called friend out and now his whole life is jacked up because of it. Makes me sick to my stomach.

What a fucking little punk ass for setting the guy up...if he wasnt a bailbondsman they probably wouldnt have gone through with the shit, you know the guy who set him up was fucking harping on him non stop, and wtf, putting labels on a bottle is NOT fucking manufacturing...that is just stretching it to give the guy another level of charges knowing manufacturing is way worse, they probably will just put the squeeze on him, great fucking work fuckos.

My favorite part: "He's also charged with seven counts of maintaining a dwelling for selling steroids." Is there even a law that specifies that? Instead of a crackhouse, we have a 'gear-house'. Brilliant.

Looks like they charged him with everything even remotely applicable for the publicity, more then likely alot of those charges will be droped or pleaded around.

I would just love to see the'quantities' he was dealing...what couple bottles here couple bottles there?
Just lovely...another waste of taxpayer dollars.
What gets me is the funny as anti tobacco commercial 'shards o glass' that shit is just too funny but so true, kills some one every day...and yet if your 18 perfectly legal...its time for the gov't to drop this horseshit front that they are worried about the unsterile gear being sold, its really just total shit to protect the pharmaceutical compaines who sell a bottle of test fro around $200.
