[h=2]Joint agency operation busts syndicate importing performance enhancing drugs[/h] 27-08-2015 -

Two men and a woman have been arrested and approximately 118 kilograms of Performance and Image Enhancing Drugs (PIED) seized as part of joint-agency operation in Melbourne yesterday.
The arrests are a result of an investigation led by the Australian Border Force (ABF) in collaboration with Victoria Police and the Australian Federal Police (AFP).
The investigation began in January 2015 when ABF officers at the Melbourne and Sydney International Mail Gateway Facilities examined packages that contained various powdered substances suspected to be PIEDs.
Following further investigation, ABF warrants were executed at two high-rise residential apartments in the Melbourne suburbs of Southbank and Camberwell, as well as a storage facility in Oakleigh.
As a result of the operation, the three individuals were arrested and charged under the Customs Act 1901 for importation of a Tier 1 good. They appeared before the Melbourne Magistrates Court yesterday.
ABF Commander Immigration and Customs Enforcement Branch, David Nockels, said the outcome of today’s warrants is yet another example of the valuable work we do to deter, detect and disrupt syndicates conducting illegal practices at the border.
“Our inter-agency approach to collaboration and information sharing has created a very challenging environment for organised crime syndicates to operate in,” Commander Nockels said.
“Our message to people who are tempted to import these substances without the appropriate permits is that we are alert to this activity and are working closely with law enforcement partners to detect and disrupt illegal importations into Australia.”
This operation comes after a fourth person was arrested by South Australia Police in West Lakes on Tuesday. The person is also facing charges for the manufacture and distribution of PIEDs in connection with the syndicate.
The maximum penalty for importation of Tier 1 goods is a fine not exceeding $180 000, five years imprisonment or both.
