No equalizer needed when you select speakers with the proper watts and crossovers, less is more. I have 100w RMS Polk Db in my doors, all the sound stage I need in a car.

In the scenario I mentioned you would want an EQ. Studio monitors are flat.

For listening you want some color from an EQ or DSP speakers. Flat is boring for listening. When monitoring you want flat.
