ALERT seizes $10 million in steroids from Edmonton in potentially the largest illegal

Here's a biggie

The Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT) has seized $10 million worth of steroids from Edmonton homes and storage lockers, marking what's believed to be the largest illegal steroid bust by a Canadian police agency.

Last week, police searched multiple locations across Edmonton in connection with a steroid production lab. At one of the locations, residents in the Hollick-Kenyon neighbourhood noticed a large police presence at a home near 162 Avenue and 54B Street and watched as hazardous materials workers removed items after item.

When all was said and done, more than 350,000 pills, 10,000 vials and three dozen types of chemical precursors and additives were seized in total from the various sites.

More details will be provided at a news conference on Thursday, but an ALERT spokesperson said the lab was a major steroid manufacturer and distributor that had connections across Canada.

Last June, a few tips from vigilant citizens lead Edmonton police to a sophisticated illegal steroid production and distribution facility. That lab contained more than 26,000 ml of liquid steroids, over 183,000 steroid pills and close to 17,000 grams of steroid powder. The total value was just over $600,000.

City police charged a 32-year-old man with a number of offence following a search of two apartment suites -- one in Edmonton and one in Fort Saskatchewan. The seizure then was the largest steroid bust in Edmonton police history.

Four years ago, a former steroid user told the*Sunthat finding an illegal steroid dealer in Edmonton was "easier than finding a pot dealer."

"They're everywhere," said the man, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. "If you know where to ask around, you'll be hooked up in an hour or two."

The man, who used them for five years, said his strength and muscle bulk increased dramatically over time, but they also gave him a hair-trigger temper, depression and acne across his back.

The public is more worried about other drugs like cocaine and speed, the man said, because steroid users don't contribute to street crime, like break ins and car thefts.

"They won't break into your home to get their next hit," he said. "But they probably commit more assaults and domestic abuse."

Another face to face slinger. I would bet 95% of busts come from recs and face to face transactions. Very dumb.
