Calls for new 2022 World Cup host as football recoils from plans to play Qatar tournament in winter

World Cup bosses were tonight
[*] urged to choose a different 2022 host after FIFA’s secretary general admitted the tournament in Qatar would have to be played in WINTER.


It would spark chaotic scenes in football leagues across Europe and the rest of the world, with English football fans potentially going without games for up to eight weeks across November, December and January.


If the tournament in eight years' time is switched to a different time of year, the Premier and Football League seasons would have to start earlier, with FA Cup games potentially being played in midweek and the European Champions League calendar left in tatters.


Football fans and Premier League players lashed out at the remarks - made by FIFA’s secretary general Jerome Valcke today - as soccer’s governing body was forced to issue a statement insisting the precise event date is still subject to an ongoing consultation process.


Valcke, given the task of looking at alternative dates due to the fierce heat of the summer in Qatar, said in a radio interview: “It will not be in June or July.”


And he added added: “To be honest I think it’ll be played between November 15 and January 15 at the latest.


“If you play between November 15 and the end of the year that’s when the weather is at its most favourable.”


Valcke suggested it will be “like a warm spring in Europe” with “an average temperature of 25 degrees, therefore it’s perfect for football”.
