10mg capsules
by dazed

Lets say you have a gram of a potent supplement that you want to make capsules with. The capsule holds 500mg of lactose when packed full. You are making 100 capules at 10mg each.

You need 49g Lactose and 1 gram supplement, and a mortar and pestle. Put the one gram supp in with 1 gram lactose, and blend until homogenous. Then add 2 g lactose to that and blend until homogenous...then 4g and blend, then 8g and blend...until you use up all the lactose.

This is called geometric dilution and its how to blend a small amount of powder with a large amount of powder uniformly.

A wedgewood mortar and pestle would probably be best, because it will reduce the particle sizes the best, so it blends well

since im lazy today: http://tlectures.com/compounding.pdf

PS. if measuring a single gram you need a good scale, I've explained this elsewhere but if your scale has a sensitivity of 100mg it's not going to work well for compounding in such small amounts.

how do you know what the capsule holds? like if you're using "0" or "1"?

Fill it, dump it out, weigh it. If your scale isn't that accurate you can fill x amount of capsules, dump them out, weigh it. Dived by x to find how much one holds.

to be accurate enough to do that you would need a good sub mg analytical balance (really you should use a sub mg balance any time you are measuring mg), if you have an extra grand laying around you can grab a Mettler AJ100 or similar sub mg scale but for most people as you mentioned the thing to do is measure a full batch of caps.

This is the exact reason why most would rather have liquid orals as a product.
But if you think 10-20 percent change in dose is not a big issue then it shouldn't matter. Even tabs can be off the same amount.
Liquid is probably the closest than anything, as long as its shaken before each use.

If you measure large batch the same you do for liquid and use proper compounding you shouldn't get the dose issues though yes it is a bit more effort to get it right.
