Alright so to go with LK’s thread about investing your money, I was wondering how long everyone invests for before making a big purchase that they have always wanted.

Whether it’s a car, house, trip, item like watch or guitar, stuff like that.

I grew up dirt poor. I’m talking last white family in Germantown (Philly) poor. So new anything is like a personal victory but being a realist I never buy “new “new” that’s for suckers.

I get my side hustles going, pick up some OT at the hospital and plan a date to buy. With NPC shows going April-Oct around here, I can prep 5-6 clients in my spare time without giving up too many hours of leaisure. I usually “treat” myself and/or family just after Xmas when the prices drop. Last big purchase we celebrated my wife’s retirement from Management and coming back to the Bedside with his and hers Range Rover Evoques (bought from lease returns not new of course.

Spend cash as often as you can. Pay one splurge off before going again. Have a roof/HVAC/Auto “war chest” established before getting loose with your finances

Used to live paycheque to paycheque so toys were few and far between.

Now within reason I buy what I want when I want. Last November I was buying Christmas presents for our boys and two of them wanted gaming consoles so I bought myself and XBOX One X on the spur of the moment.

Yesterday I saw a band I like was playing at a Casino near us so I bought tickets and booked a room without a second thought. This will be at least a $750 one night getaway and 10 years ago I wouldn't even have thought of doing it.

Now a new car that is different...

I'm pretty easily amused and entertained, so I don't feel the need to spend huge amounts of money on toys, vacations, etc. I don't go out clubbing until all hours of the morning several nights a week like I did 20+ years ago.

And unlike many of my friends, I don't play very much golf or do very much hunting or fishing these days - all of which are pretty costly and time-consuming... of course such activities can be great ways to network and meet people.

Aside from having a nice home and a pretty nice car, I'm not a huge spender... I like a decent suit of clothes, a couple of private club memberships, and some good food in the fridge, but I'm not quite Ric Flair.

Cable TV, computer, and books occupy a good chunk of my time. Of course I'm working at the computer with the tv on in the background a good bit of the time during the week.

I like to eat out several times a week and have a few drinks once or so a week. Often get a room at the nearby casino hotel a couple of nights a month - I don't gamble but I will eat well and drink it up.

Re the large purchases like a home and cars, I like to plan ahead and start putting money away for a while before I actually make a purchase. And I like to get such items paid off as soon as possible - cars in particular. Of course I try to get the best deal possible on a major purchase.

Ugh! If it's not an impulse buy I usually sit on it for some reason. Been looking an a mac daddy Weber grill for some time now,
Genesis® II LX S-640 Gas Grill

https://www.weber.com/US/en/grills/genesis-ii-lx-s-640-gas-grill

And still looking at more watches, but dropping $5K on a watch, if it's not impulse it's just talk, lol

That looks very similar to my Car-Broil Tru infrared I bought for Half the price. Just saying, Unless it's cooking for you, why waste the $$$. They all do the same thing.

Before I get stuff I ask myself, do I need this. Most times I don't. I like to travel, so I save my $$ up for that stuff.

Nice looking grill man. Are you gonna go ahead and get it?

One thing nice about a watch like that is they hold their value.

Cartier makes a round watch that I saw in the store: http://www.cartier.com/en-us/collec...er/w2bb0012-ballon-bleu-de-cartier-watch.html

I don't like that watch but to each their own. Once one catches my eye it's burnt into my brain until I buy it, glad I didn't like that link, lol

@JackD - Charbroils rust out within 5 years, Weber's last much longer and have a more even heat.

@lizardking mine is all stainless, grates too, had it 6 years. But I’ll take your word for it about Weber.

As I get older I collect less and spend more on experiences. Concerts, plays, vacations. I am slowly making a man-cave in my basement but I'll do all but the carpeting myself.

That all depends. At one time, things were really good and I had no idea just how nice it was. I would buy all kinds of things and not even think much of it. But I was a workaholic. Since 2009, I have become much more conservative. Funny thing, is I am actually happier now. I never enjoyed the things I had because I was always focusing on what I could do next. Learning to stop and enjoy what you have and those around you is the best thing that ever could have happened.

FWIW, this was my ride 'back in day'. Out of the 'stuff' I had, this I actually do miss this a little. But just the costs associated to house, and maintain and fly, (not including buying the thing) are a good mortgage. DIfferent priorities these days.
