TID fam,
I've been suffering from a large herniated disc and extreme nerve sciatica. As a result, I've been told I need a lower back surgical procedure called a "micro-disectomy." My surgeon all told me I need to hang up the heavy lifting and focus on lightweight machine exercises or I'd keep messing it up. I'm struggling because this has been my second love next to my wife. I feel psychologically scared to even do the machine because of the extreme, crippling pain I've experienced. I'm just not sure how to deal with the surgeons response or the subconscious fear. It's really depressing.

Sounds like the diagnosis and recommendations are all very recent? With the pain you describe you're not gonna drag your feet on all this, but you do have time to read up all you can on the Net, seek 2nd opinions if you choose, and discuss with your wife. With your comment about your wife beating lifting down to a "2nd love," I suspect she's gonna be your best source of advice, comfort, and assembling all the other advice-overload you'll get. Depression is normal, time will heal that wound, don't isolate yourself from your best friend ever.

editing to add another thought, cause I majored in Random Advice at Harvard, insofar as possible with y'all's schedules, work, etc, bring her with you for doctor consultation appt's. If you have an appt that you KNOW for sure is just for you to get bloodwork or X-Rays or EMG or MRI, with no doctor chit-chat, that may be a waste. But when it's time for you and the doc to sit down and chart your next steps, there will be lots to listen to, and 2 heads are better than one, esp if the other one is hers.

Agreed completely. Get a second opinion, and think it over.

Never take just 1 person's opinion (and I don't care that it's a doc). Do the legwork and get more opinions. Talk to specialists and don't give up.

I've been dealing with the injury for almost 2 months. I've gone through every possible treatment option. The Drs have put me on several medications to help with the pain. Since it hasn't healed much in 7ish weeks, that's where they came to the conclusion that surgery is necessary. My wife says she doesn't want me lifting heavy because of the pain she saw I was in when I got hurt. Just tough to decide whether to hang up the cleats per say, or just gradually try to build my body back up slowly and see how it responds.

He is a specialist. I've had 4 opinions and they're all in agreement for the surgery...

Call me a cynic but I have very little faith in doctors. I had several tell me that I had "growing pains" as a kid and if I had listened to them I would still be stuck in a wheelchair.

. . . . . .

probably WILL be tough to decide, but that decision will come later. If that kind of thinking is part of any current depression, don't let it be. Hell, you can always get depressed LATER, lol. Meanwhile, notice what BI said about himself, and consider you'll know a lot more about how you feel about your body later, right now you're just playing what my wife calls "What If," when I annoy her.

I edited my original post in case you missed it, some wife talk there. After that Major at Harvard, I was awarded a BS, btw . . . . .

I feel your pain...
While I obviously don't know the specifics of your injury, I have twice been told by doctors I wouldn't couldn't lift, run even work. It was devastating. Like you it's a love of mine. I have also been told that surgery was mandatory. I chose not to do it and it's been a long road. I do t know whether I made the right decision or not but I'll live by it. Enough of my rambling, the point is that there are way bigger, better guys than me that have done it and recovered and improved. Stories of people like Dave Tate and Glenn Pendlay have inspired me. There are tons more

Hang it up for now, have the surgery, do what they say and you'll be back. The sooner you have it done the sooner you can get back in the gym. It sucks but it sounds like it has to get done.

sorry to hear. i know exactly what your going through. it's gonna be hard to deal with mentally. got to be headstrong. stay positive. if you're extremely into working out it's gonna be really rough mentally to deal with so just be prepared. just make sure your doctor doesn't cut too much away when you get to that disk fixed. . one of my doctors cut too much away and then my spine collapsed. my advice is no squads no deads and don't put too much stress on your spine because now you have a week link which Will put more pressure on the other parts of your spine. which will be lead to more back injuries.
i had 4 back surgeries and probably going to need revision surgery too. i haven't touched a weight since sept 7th. it's all about keeping ur sanity knowing you can't work out for a while. this is the hardest thing to deal with mentally. i wish you all the best and if you need any support you can pm me as i been and am in your shoes,

It depends on the injury. Jacky Chan and Rocky S. Stallon suffered many surgical penetrations after accidents during filming stunt scenes.

a book can not change the world
