This is one of those critical points in today's society, and one I need everyone's mind in here to come up suggestions. I am pretty much stumped. Imagine my frustration, a trainer that cannot get a client to loose weight. And that individual is on a very calorie restricted diet, and exercises really hard multiple times a week, but really has almost no success at weight loss.

I know some individuals who have asthma and allergy's, and the problem is, the asthma controller medication they are on, I just found out (Advair) causes people to gain weight, and it's extremely tuff for individuals to loose weight while using Advair. I've done searches online, come up with tons of information about people putting weight on with the medication, but nothing to suggest what people can take or do to be successful at weight loss.

I'd love to hear if any of you take asthma meds? which ones? If they are successful as a controller?

And I need some ideas on how I can make this person successful at weight loss. Whether different drugs, or something to counteract the sides of Advair. She is a Female, Early 30's, good health, no other conditions or issues.

I wish I could say she was, but I've known this person for a long time, and am pretty close to them, so I know what she eats and what does not. I also know how she was before the Docs put her on Advair, no issues, now the crazy part is, when she was put on advair, she was working out 5 days a week, doing everything exactly the same, but for some reason putting on weight. Calories got cut even more, but everything else training wise stayed the same, or intensified a bit, but to my avail, still nothing and no change, the weight gained is still there, now I am stumped.

Haven't tried anything other than basic over the counter Energy boosters, but I'm thinking, trying what IC suggested might help, the Clen might even allow her to not take her advair as much.

But I am open to ALL ideas from anyone. I don't think anything can hurt.

As far as asthma medications go, why not maybe nudge her in the direction of albuterol/clenbuterol instead of advair? While i'm not really suited on giving medical advice and you probably aren't either, I've done some reading online about albuterol and clenbuterol, they both are use for fat burning purposes as well as asthma control

Do you allow her any cheat days?
Do you allow her any active recovery days?
How are you running her cardio?
Could you post up what she is actually eating and how many calories below her maintenance she is eating?

Do not give clen to an asthmatic, it could interfere with their regular asthma meds.

My wife has the same problem when she tries to lose weight, very tough time even on a caloric deficient diet and exercise. If you find some good answer let me know.

Sorry, I missed Wolf's post. Advair has a steroid in it to open the airways, clen/albuterol will not control the chronic asthma the same way as far as I know.

Thanks for Taking the time Guy's to respond. Wolf, my answers are in blue :)

Do you allow her any cheat days? Yes, Usually once a week (Saturday)
Do you allow her any active recovery days? Usually Saturday and Sunday are off days
How are you running her cardio? Cardio is Elleptical 40 to 60 mins 5 x wk
Could you post up what she is actually eating and how many calories below her maintenance she is eating?

Honestly, I did not suggest this, but she is borderline starving herself for a bit.
Breakfast, 1 package oatmeal 1 scoop protein
Lunch Salad, or Apple
Dinner 1 package Oatmeal and 1 scoop protein

Supplements:
Jacked 3D before working out
Multi-Vitamin
Vitamin C
Calcium/Mag
Vitamin D

Yeah I'm trying to figure this out. I'll post it up for you when I do.

You are right, they won't. She is going to make an appt with a regular DR, get complete Blood work done, then see a Asthma Specialist to see if there is something else that will work.

I did not know that about Advair, LK. Her diet is way too low, her protein is way too low. I would think that shes going to cause more muscle breakdown than anything with that diet. The problem that you are going to run into with a diet like that and a training routine is two fold. The diet isn't going to support maximum muscle sparing because of the very low protein content, even with the scoops of protein, I'm assuming its whey, there was a recent study i read that basically suggested that a large quantity of the protein in a whey supplement would be made into carbohydrates. Her metabolism is going to fall and be exasberated by the fact that she is working out and doing a lot of cardio.

To me it sounds like a recipe that's going to cause her to snow ball between muscle loss and fat gain. I would replace her diet with a high protein, low carb, low fat approach for say two weeks. 1 gram of protein per a lean pound of body mass, unlimited green leafy vegetables and fish oil tablets for healthy fats. If she is going to fast she might as well do it the proper way.

You need to find the source of why the weight gain is caused. Obviously it's something in the medication. Maybe she needs to split up her meals more throughout the day. When I find people are having trouble losing weight I tell them to eat one small meal right before they go to bed and then eat a smaller breakfast when they wake up (but do cardio on an empty stomach before breakfast). This seems to help, especially for women. I find that they are afraid to eat the later it gets in the night. Then they wake up with their body starved and can't make it through an early morning cardio routine. Also, get her lifting weights if she's not.

Core work is especially important. My sister has asthma and was able to lose 30+ pounds so far by concentrating on weights and core work. Of course, she still does cardio just the same. But the core work with cables and other aids has helped to improve her flexibility and motivation. She used to get winded much quicker but realized once she was able to start losing weight that is was her lack of flexibility that was causing her to use bad form or undesirable breathing patterns.

Not sure if any of this will help you but just wanted to share.

Yeah i was shocked till i researched advair too. LOL Actually, i believe i even called her crazy too...lol yeah i'm eating those words now.

In any event i really appreciate your suggestions, i'm taking your advice and creating a meal plan of high protein, low carb and fat for 5 meals a day. Change up the cardio a bit 20 to 30 mins, then do weight circuit training instead for 30 to 40 mins with only 30 seconds rest between exercises. I Think i'll really have to work her up to that time though. Cool, thanks guys, i'll keep everyone posted.
