    deadlift question.

hey brothers and sisters, i seen a guy deadlifting not too long ago and he was just picking the weight up, and letting it drop to the floor, re gripping, etc.. he is a strong man from here in n.y. and we had a brief conversation on why he was doing that..he noticed i was returning the bar to the floor and in his explanation, wasting grip strength and power.since i have a comp coming up very soon, and i am trying to adjust away from my body building habits, very very tough thing btw, would it be wise to follow this guys advice?? i have to go to work, very long days lay ahead so i really will thank my people here in advance because i am not sure when the next time i will be able to thank you for your suggestions. have a great week people!!!

He's right you do waist strength and IMO it's safer to just drop it.... But I don't for a couple reasons, I train mostly in a commercial gym and I try to be respectful of others even tho I'm the only one with any kind of Gym Etiquette and second they have gay ass hectogon weights.... If I'm going real heavy tho they can kiss my ass I'm dropping it... I've been warned for making to much noise in the past an I tell them oh well I'm dropping everyone I max out so kick me out if u want...

I've not come across this method before. What about the return/neg rep?

Why do you ask blubbard? Oldschool is a strong mofo and picks up some heavy shit, not that that should have anything to do with the question.

OS, I understand that guy's reasoning, but ****ing up the gym equipment isn't cool and you may be missing some of the benefit of the negative portion of the lift. Now if you have bumper weights and platforms at your gym, have at it, though I still think the negative can be important.

We arent allowed to drop it in SM. Not sure if PL is the same way. I wouldnt think it would be a good habit to get in to and really see no reason to do it that way.

Can't drop it in powerlifting either. Personally, I wouldn't train with dropping the weight especially if you're competing in some sort of weight lifting comp.

Absolutely NOT you have to at least pretend to have control of the bar in a Powerlifting meet.

Strong men break too many things doing that crap, many many many bent bars!

What we do is once you get it to the top and you need to bring it down is hold it to about thighs or knees then let it drop with your hands still on the bar!

If you let it drop without hands on bar then the lift won't count.

But also never control the weight going down you'll never get a good deadlift that way, nobody is controlling 600 plus or less they do as I described.

But yes reset every rep no matter how long it takes!

You've seen my vids. When I pull, I drop from about 3/4 down. Probably starting in july I will return the bar to the floor as I should in a comp.

No keep doing it that way just keep the hands on the bar and pretend you have control it's how we all do it!.

I ask because if he were small and/or relatively weak (by powerlifting / strongman standards) I would tell him to stop asking dumb ****ing questions and never drop the bar. The negative will help you grow. On the other hand if you have a competition coming up and your at a high level, then perhaps there is some benefit to dropping the weight. I have done this in the past as the comp approaches, especially if I feel beat up or have some crazy back pumps.

Oldschool, you don't want to get in the habit of just dropping it b/c in a meet you have to pull and than wait for the down signal (and you don't drop it when you get the signal). I've seen guys get red lighted for dropping their shit like that. You should train like how you compete at a meet. Get set, pull the bar w/out hitching, hold it at the top, and than lower it. Don't slowly lower but don't let go.
