NEW YORK, May 30 (Reuters) - New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg plans to propose a far-reaching municipal ban on sales of large-size sugary beverages by restaurants, mobile food carts, movie theaters and delis, his administration said on Wednesday.
A document outlining the proposal said it was aimed at fighting an epidemic of obesity, citing public health statistics showing that 58 percent of New York City adults and nearly 40 percent of city public school students are obese or overweight.
The proposal defines sugary drinks as beverages that are "sweetened with sugar or another caloric sweetener that contain more than 25 calories per 8 fluid ounces and contains less than 51 percent milk or milk substitute by volume as an ingredient."
It would impact drinks sold in containers larger than 16 ounces, but would not impact the sale of diet soda or dairy-based drinks.
Bloomberg's efforts to correct unhealthy behaviors have included a campaign to cut down on salt and a ban on trans fats in restaurant food, along with a requirement that chain restaurants display calorie counts.
In 2003, the city banned smoking in bars and restaurants, generating howls of protest at the time from smokers and non-smokers who saw it as a case of government creeping into private lives, but the law has since become widely accepted.
The proposed ban on sugary drinks requires the approval of the city's Board of Health. It will submitted to the board on June 12.
In a statement, a spokesman for the New York City Beverage Association challenged Bloomberg's assertion that the consumption of soda was driving obesity rates.
"It's time for serious health professionals to move on and seek solutions that are going to actually curb obesity," said spokesman Stefan Friedman. "These zealous proposals just distract from the hard work that needs to be done on this front."

Good! The BK triple whopper was not allowed to be advertised here (Spain) due to health reasons.
once in a while there are some good ideas here in NY
Well I drink Diet Coke however thats pushing it a bit far. Last I had heard they had decided to tax soda with sugar another 10%.
This is more nanny state bullshit from my favorite fake republican...
Soda isn't what is causing obesity. There isn't one singular product doing it.
More tax in ny admin say it aint so lol.
I'm with POB, we're free and they are elected, time for anyone infringing on our freedoms to go.
Yeah last time I checked soda was a leagl product. What happens in a few year they say working out causes to many injuries so we are banning it.
Shortly after this announcement NY declared today as national donut day.Double standard bullshit.
Donut and Diet Coke FTW!
I'm on the Diet Coke as I type this now wishing I had a big ass donut :-)
Yeah thanks alot i want a donut too lol
I agree with taxing that shit. You wanna be big and fat, pay mother ****ers!
I think there should be a news section with good fellas as the anchor!!
This government has outgrown its usefulness
1. PORTION CONTROL: portions these days are out of control. It's proven in science that people will keep eating or drinking what is in front of them even if they are no longer hungry. The better approach is to select a smaller portion and eat it, and then if you feel truly "hungry" 30 minutes to an hour after eating then eat a "sensible" snack (I hate how diet companies use the word "sensible" but I couldn't think of a better one, lol)
2. People do not drink enough water. Again, science has proven that hunger and thirst can be confused by the brain often. So that means that when you feel hungry you should reach for a few gulps of water instead of a bag of chips. I tried this out personally and found that it has worked well for me in the past. I always make sure to have a water bottle of some kind everywhere I go. Usually I just buy the big jugs and keep refilling a small travel container.
3. Drinking soft drinks so often gets you used to the taste and it is not as satisfying. For most, the feeling after a large meal is downright depressing, yet we do it again and again. Guess what? YOU CAN STILL DRINK SODAS AND EAT BIG MEALS! If you choose to limit your consumption of these types of foods, they will be much more enjoyable. I used to drink sodas and energy drinks all the time. Now that I limit my consumption they taste amazing when I do have one. The same goes for beer if I'm cutting. Instead of having a bunch of light beers, I'll drink 1 or 2 beers that I actually find enjoyable when I need a fix. If I want to feel a little fuzzy in the head I just break out the low calorie magic bottle of patron and chill some shots!
This country is way too ****ing fat and we are creating all new types of diseases and disgusting habits that never should have existed. If you struggle with being a fat ass piece of shit, it's ok, just tell yourself you deserve better remind yourself that it was you who got yourself to this point (no matter what really happened). Everyone can lose weight...the problem with society is that a good majority of people are lazy ****ers. Get your shit together!
