ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Giancarlo Stanton will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Sunday after lasting just two innings in his first start in five games, leaving the Miami Marlins without a representative on the field at Tuesday's All-Star game.

"He might be out for a month or six weeks, that's what I think," manager Ozzie Guillen said after a 3-2 loss at St. Louis on Saturday. "Hopefully less. We're better off that way because that kid couldn't do anything."

General manager Mike Hill said surgery had been discussed as an alternative if Stanton had difficulty playing. He said the procedure to remove a loose body in the knee is fairly routine.

"It was just discomfort," Hill said. "And we knew that once we had tried it, that if it flared up again surgery was the logical option."

CHICAGO (AP) -- Chicago White Sox pitcher Jake Peavy has been selected to replace Los Angeles Angels left-hander C.J. Wilson on the AL roster for Tuesday night's All-Star game.

Peavy, who lost to Texas Rangers rookie Yu Darvish in online voting for the final spot on the AL team, is 7-5 with a 2.85 ERA for the AL Central-leading White Sox. The 31-year-old right-hander also has four complete games.

Wilson, a two-time All-Star, has a blister issue on the middle finger of his pitching hand and is going to use the break to rest. Major League Baseball says Wilson plans to attend the All-Star festivities in Kansas City.

Wilson is 9-5 with a 2.43 ERA in 18 starts for the Angels this season.

The roster change was announced on Sunday.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are a surprise contender at the All-Star break, and they are looking to get stronger. FOX Sports‘ Jon Paul Morosi reports that the team has expressed interest in The San Diego Padres’ Carlos Quentin and the Arizona Diamondbacks’ Justin Upton, both power-hitting outfielders that would add a jolt of offense to the Pirates line-up.

The Pirates have gotten an impressive amount of production from outfielder Andrew McCutchen, who has a .359 batting average with a .411 on-base percentage and 16 home runs at the halfway point of the season. However, the team could benefit from having a cleanup hitter later in the batting order as McCutchen figures to face less pitches in the season’s second half and into the playoffs.

Upton, who has hit .267 with seven home runs and 36 RBIs has been mentioned in trade discussions recently, while Carlos Quentin has achieved similar numbers with the Padres.

Rangers going in to the Allstar break in first place.Need to play better the second half.8 Rangers on the A.L. team. I remember when I was a kid they would only have one player each year.Usually Jim Sunberg or Buddy Bell.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Reggie Jackson says he messed up by disparaging Alex Rodriguez, Gary Carter and other big names in baseball and has been reaching out to make apologies.
Jackson had told Sports Illustrated that Rodriguez's statistics were tainted by the Yankees star's admitted use of performance-enhancing drugs. Jackson also said he didn't see Carter, Kirby Puckett, Phil Niekro, Don Sutton and Jim Rice as Hall of Famers.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are interested in swinging a deal with the Philadelphia Phillies for Cole Hamels this month but may not have the pieces to entice the Phillies, CBS Sports’ Danny Knobler reported on Sunday.

The Dodgers were expected to be a top potential destination for Hamels when the 28-year-old Hamels hits the free-agent market this winter. But now that Dodgers’ starter Chad Billingsley will need an MRI on his elbow, the Dodgers might have an immediate need for an infusion of starting pitching. The Dodgers are 1.5 games behind the San Francisco Giants in the National League West.

Isn`t he on the last year of his contract? They must not think they can resign him if they are willing to trade.

I tried watching a baseball game the other day but fell asleep due to the sheer boredom of no action.
