Defendant In Steroid Ring Bust Goes On Trial

LEBANON, Ohio -- One of 32 people charged in a Tri-State steroid ring went on trial Thursday.

Jessica Howard is the first -- and possibly only -- defendant to go on trial. Many of the other people charged have already accepted pleas.

Howard's fiancé, Matthew Geraci, is the suspected ringleader of "Operation Bulk Up." He testified against Howard Thursday, describing in detail how the operation worked.

"File cabinet with steroids in them … that's how they were shipped," Geraci testified.

Geraci also described how the drugs were dealt using a system of lockers.

"People would text me before and tell me what they wanted. … I would put it in lockers and they would come pick it up and take it out, leave the money, and later on, I would go back and get the money," he testified.

Prosecutors allege Howard delivered the drugs to the lockers from a secret room where the drugs were stashed. Geraci said only three people knew about the location.

"When I'd give her a key, she'd be able to get in," Geraci said about Howard.

Prosecutors said the drugs ended up in the hands of high school athletes and that the money from the sales ended up in Howard's pockets.

"She lived off the proceeds of selling steroids," said assistant prosecutor Andy Sievers.

But Howard's attorney said that she was nothing more than a lover and a stay-at-home mother to Geraci's children.

"Evidence will fail to prove she was a part of this Geraci steroid enterprise," said defense attorney Fran Schiavone Jr. "She fell in love with the wrong man, who controlled her and helped her get here today."

If found guilty, Howard faces up to 20 years in prison.

Agree, it seems he pointed the finger at her so he could get off easy. I have more respect for her fighting it than I do for him rolling over like a bitch.

I fail to see how this crime is worth 20 years in prison.

It's very possible that this could be an effective joint strategy. However, in this case, one of the people has taken a plea. Normally, you get two people that have strong circumstantial evidence against them, and neither take a plea, but testify against the other. With two people pointing the finger at each other, there can be reasonable doubt against both, and they both walk.

In this case, it looks like the guy who took the plea had hard evidence against him, so he had to take a plea. So he agrees to testify against somebody (his fiance) who has nothing tying her to the crime, but a rat's testimony. So she is held innocent, and he gets a reduced sentence. If they both agree to it ahead of time, it can be a shrewd move.

Many fiances would do that for their partner. It's a risk, but he may have gotten a modest reduction in his sentence. A smart prosecutor looks for this kind of stuff. You better believe that they've deposed this guy thoroughly, and if he doesn't testify exactly in accordance with his earlier testimony, his plea deal goes bye-bye.

Good point... Headline of my local paper today is two guys were sentenced to prison yesterday. A couple years ago these two guys picked up a 17 year old off the street and gang raped her. They both got 4.5 years.
