What's the best time to take flaxseed and fish oils to get the most positive benefits out of them?

There's no best time to it. Just take 1-2 capsules with your 3 major meals.

Too much fish oil can be a bad thing.
I don't buy into that at all. All of the studies I have read have shown that the higher the amount of Omega 3 is consumed the greater the health benefits are. Also remember that most people are deficient in Omega 3's, and the ingestion of Omega 6 further reduces them; Omega 3 is anti-inflammatory where Omega 3 is pro-inflammatory.

Also bear in mind that a lot of the countries with low heart and CV disease numbers are ones with a high Omega 3 consumption (and other healthy EFA components such as HUFA's, PUFA's, arachidonic acid etc). The Okinawans and Inuit's for example have been shown to have an average Omega 3 intake of around 17,000mg and their race has virtually NO cholesterol, heart or CV problems. Food for thought.

fish oil is definitely “better” than flax seed oil. Fish oil contains two omega-3s that are especially important: EPA and DHA.
the body uses epa to create many harmons.Flax seed oil contains an omega-3 called alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), which is one of two fatty acids that the body needs and cannot make for itself.

Fish oil is superior in most capacities due to the fact that it contains un-conjugated fatty acids. Flax oil is mostly CLA, or Conjugated Linolenic Acid, which the human body does not utilize as efficiently.

Fish oil also comes closer to optimal 3/6/9 ratios.

Flaxseed oil contains ALA/LA but not CLA. CLA is primarily derived from sunflower oil when it's in supplement form (in food form we can get it through meat and dairy), so the only way a flax oil would contain CLA is if the brand has sunflower oil added into the flax.

We can utilise CLA if that's what we are taking in else there would be no benefit to taking CLA supplements (and we know the studies confirm they are effective for fat loss), it's just that we can't convert ALA into CLA like some animals can. Is that what you were meaning?

Fish oil is just omega 3 (with the omega 3 fatty acids being EPA/DHA) ~ it's the flax oil that covers the 3/6/9. Omega 3 is more important for overall health as we tend to consume enough omega 6 through our diets. Omega 3 is anti inflammatory whereas omega 6 is pro inflammatory, increasing the production of inflammatory chemicals known as eicosanoids.

I had an article published last year which goes into a lot more detail if you are interested:
